Breast Reduction Procedures

If a woman has breasts that are disproportionably large, she may wish to consider having a breast reduction. A breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, can alleviate the pain and discomfort that extremely large or pendulous breasts can cause.

The extra weight of disproportional breasts can cause back and neck pain in a woman as well as rashes and yeast infections on the skin underneath the breasts. These are good causes for women to have breast reduction procedures.

Of course, there are the emotional reasons for breast reduction as well. Extremely large breasts can make a woman feel self-conscious and unattractive, so that a breast reduction would be desirable.

A woman should carefully consider her options before she chooses breast reduction surgery. Though she may truly desire to look and feel better, she should be aware of the drawbacks to having a breast reduction.

The scars from a breast reduction are noticeable and permanent. A woman can lessen scars with scar creams and she will be able to cover them with a bra or bathing suit, but the scars from a breast reduction will not ever completely fade away. Furthermore, a woman who has a breast reduction procedure will likely not be able to breast feed a baby after the breast reduction because of the milk glands that the surgeon removes during the procedure.

Breast reduction surgery is usually a two to three hour outpatient procedure. While this is a safe medical procedure, complications can occur after the breast reduction that can include infection and excessive bleeding. To reduce the risk of these complications it is wise to choose a plastic surgeon that is qualified, skilled, and experienced.
