Chemical Peel

Overview

Chemical peeling is a popular resurfacing technique in which the surgeon applies a chemical solution to the skin, causing the outermost layer to be shed. It improves the appearance of uneven pigmentation, superficial wrinkles, and skin blemishes. A chemical peel may be performed alone, or in combination with other aesthetic enhancements such as a facelift or eyelid surgery. Depending on your skin type and specific concerns, you may be required to follow a pretreatment regimen, usually including hydroquinone, Retin-A, or both.

The procedure

Your doctor will select the best formula to address your specific skin concerns, usually a solution containing trichloroacetic acid. The peeling agent is applied to the treatment area, and allowed to soak for a predetermined length of time, usually around 15 minutes. The strength and timing of the peel can be adjusted, to achieve resurfacing ranging from superficial to deep. Anesthesia is not needed for the procedure, because the peeling solution has anesthetic ingredients. When the peel is complete and the formula has been removed from your skin, a topical ointment will be applied to ensure your comfort and keep the treated areas hydrated.

Depending on the extent of the peel, you may experience mild swelling and moderate discomfort following the procedure. This should subside in about seven days or sooner. We will provide ointment for you to take home. You will need to rinse the area gently with tepid water, carefully pat dry, and apply the ointment twice daily. If the provided ointment causes itching, rash, or other skin irritation, discontinue use and apply pure petroleum jelly instead. You will need to avoid sun exposure until the healing process is complete. Within about seven to ten days, your skin should be healed adequately that you will be able to resume most normal activities. For several months, you will need to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 any time that your skin will be exposed to sun, even for a short duration.

Results

The final result of a chemical peel procedure is a smoother, healthier, more youthful appearance with improved skin tone. You will notice a reduction in fine lines, coarse skin texture, pigmentation problems, and other signs of aging. The results of a chemical peel are long lasting, and the procedure can be repeated biannually if you desire.
